The reddish feathers on the crown distinguish Cattle Egrets Bubulcus ibis from the Snowy Egret. These reddish feathers are present during the breading season from March to July. This is quite apparent in the first four photos taken in mid-May at Ramer Lake, Brawley, CA. Photos 2109, 2113 and 2137 show an Egret rookery at Ramer Lake. The next four photos were taken on Maui, HI in February. In Hawaii the Cattle Egret seems to be ubiquitous – on fields, in gardens, on golf courses – almost everywhere. Given Hawaii’s lack of sea gulls and terns it is refreshing to at least see one common white bird flying around. It is fairly tame. In figure 4978 I was able to get within 10 feet before it flew off. The reddish crown is either absent of very subtle during the non-breeding season from August to February.
