The Kelp Gull, Southern Black-backed Gull, Dominican GullLarus dominicanus is a rare migrant from South America. These photos were taken in the Penguin House of Seaworld in Orlando. There are three gulls with the combination of a red spot on the lower bill and black back and wings: The Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black Backed Gull and the Kelp Gull. The first two are have a range along the coast of eastern U.S. while the Kelp Gull is a rare visitor from South America. The Kelp Gull superficially resembles two gulls from further north in the Atlantic Ocean the Lesser Black-backed Gull and the Great Black-backed Gull. The Kelp is intermediate in size between these two species.
