The Bar-tailed GodwitLimosa lapponica makes the longest known non-stop flight of any bird and also the longest journey without pausing to feed by any animal, 7,258 mi, along a route from Alaska to New Zealand. Photos 4008-4011 were taken at the Otorohanga Kiwi House Zoo, New Zealand. The remaining photos were taken at Miranda Beach on the Firth of Thames and near the Miranda Shorebird Centre. The tide was coming in and the birds slowly came closer to us, but still at a significant distance. When we first approached the beach, thousands of the Godwits were flying in the distance. These landed (6874 and 6783). A few birds came close enough to get a photo of a single bird (6985).
