The most striking aspect of the Willet Catoptrophorus semipalmatus is its appearance in flight with a broad white stripe between black stripes at leading wing and the tips of the feathers (1682, 6494). The long strait bill is also distinctive. Most of these photos were taken at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, Huntington Beach, CA. Photos 5825 and 7849 were taken in November at the Huntington Beach Back Bay estuary, CA. Unlike the Curlew and the Whimbrel there are no prominent strips running the length of the head.
A distinctive feature is the white ring around most of the eye, the overall grey color and the green legs.
Most of these photos are of the Western Willet, except photo 3709 taken at the 'Ding' Darling NWR in FL, and 9048 taken at Boliver Flats, TX is a Eastern Willet.
