The Elf Owl is the smallest owl in North America. This one was easy to find and photograph. It was in the old telephone pole right outside our room at the Battise Bird and Breakfast in Hereford, AZ. Tony Battise called us out at 6:47 PM just at dusk when the male and female Elf Owls poke their heads out of the hole and the male flies off to gather food for his mate leaving her to look out of the nest. There is one photo taken with a flash – one without red eye correction, the other with. Next year when we return we hope to get a full Monty shot.
