The Burrowing Owl is a threatened species. Members of the Arizona Audubon Society are making efforts to get this owl to repopulate areas of Arizona by placing them in old ground hog burrows. Several hundred are first placed together in a pen for several months until they forget when they came from, making them more amenable to stay where they are replaced. Each bird is banded in the process, often with a band on both legs as shown here. This owl was just “out-standing-in-his-field”allowing me to come within 10 yards for a shot.
