While staying at the Pigeon Cove Condo near Charleston, OR (see VRBO.com) I scanned the mud flats at low tide and saw a shore bird with a black breast. Suspecting it was a Black-bellied PloverPluvialis squatarola I put on my water shoes and slowly stalked the bird, finally getting close enough to get these photographs. The female has some black on its breast but not a much. The juveniles have none.
The photos 8476-8493 were taken at the Newport Beach Back Bay from a kayak. They show the winter plumage of the Black-bellied Plover
