Next to the Grackle, the Bananaquit Coereba flaveola is the most common bird in the West Indies. Its yellow body and black head flashes from many trees and bushes. Up close it shows a small reddish area just under the mandible. The red color is due to the absence of feathers reminiscent of the red head of the Sandhill Crane (see photos 3964a,b, 3836). Photos 5075 and 5077 show why it is called the Bananaquit. They were swarming all over this bunch of bananas.
