Swallows are difficult to photograph in flight. When they stop their frenetic flying long enough to tend a nest of young 7377, photographing them is a lot easier. These Barn Swallows Hirundo rusticus at the nest, were photographed near the Pro Shop of the Mount Hood Golf Course, OR. The female 7359 has a whiter breast than the male 7400.
Photos 8367 and 8384 of Barn Swallows in flight were taken at the Nehalem Bay Wastewater Ponds at Nehalem Bay, OR. Photo 8367 shows an aspect of Barn Swallows rarely or barely shown in bird guides, the row of elongated white spots midway down the tail feathers. This is also shown less dramatically in photo 8384.
The five photos were taken at Pt Reyes, CA and show three juvenile Barn Swallows being fed by their parents.
The final twophotos show two swallows Barn and Tree (1886), that were on a power line as were driving along the road near the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. Further down the road the Barn Swallows were on the ground (2168) making an easier photograph than when they are flying. Photos 8203 and 8220 were taken at High Island, TX.
