The Cherrie's TanagerRamphocelus costaricensis, is a resident breeder in the Pacific lowlands of Costa and western Panama. Cherrie’s Tanager and Passerini’s Tanagermake a strange pair. The males, with scarlet rumps and thus sometimes called the Scarlet-rumped Tanager areidentical and only the females of these two species are different. The female has a grey head, olive upperparts, orange rump, brownish wings and tail, and ochre underparts with a broad orange breast band. This is well illustrated in photo 7310. Photo 6983 shows the male and female. The female Passerini’s Tanager has a very faint orange rump and breast instead of the bright orange of Cherrie’s.
These photos were taken at the Esquinas Rain Forest and the Talari Mountain Lodge feeders.
