The male Black-head Grosbeak Pheucticus melanocephalus is a striking bird that quickly lights up any feeder. The scientific genus name Pheucticus meaning "painted with cosmetics" emphasizes this, and the species name melanocephalus means black head. The female (6286, 2039) is less striking but her black and white striped head is still a head turner. The juvenile female is lacks the bright orange color of its breast.
The Black-head Grosbeak ranges all over the Western United States.
