This prehistoric looking animal, the Iguana Iguana iguana, is a genus of herbivorous lizards native to tropical areas of Mexico, Central America, several islands in Polynesia such as Fiji and Tonga, the Galapagos, and the Caribbean. Two species are included in the genus Iguana: the green or common iguana which is widespread throughout its range and a popular pet, and the Lesser Antillean Iguana which is endemic to the Lesser Antilles and endangered due to habitat destruction.
The word "iguana" is derived from a Spanish form of the original Taino name for the species, iwana.
These were photographed throughout Costa Rica from Selva Verde and Cano Negro, to Hacienda Solimar, Taracoles River, and Esquinas Rain Forest.
On the road south of Cano Negro is a restaurant called the Iguana Restaurant with Iguanas scattered throughout the trees around the restaurant (3065).
