The Northern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus is mostly an Eastern bird with a tiny additional range in southwest Arizona. The yellow around the eye is distinctive plus a fat round body with distinctive brown and white coloring on the back and the breast and abdomen. These were photographed at the Arizona-Sonoran Dessert Museum aviary.
The Masked Southwestern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus ridgwayi is a rare and very local variant subspecies in the grasslands of southeaster Arizona. This specimen was easy to find and photograph because it was in the wild bird aviary of the Arizona-Sonorian Desert Museum, mixed in with the Northern Bobwhite (see next page). It has a distinctive black head and orange breast.
