The American KestralFalco sparverius is seen in open habitats, grasslands and fields across the U.S. It is the smallest of the falcons. Its bright oranges colors make it an easy bird to identify in the field. These close-up photos were taken at the hawk banding demonstration at Cape May. Of interest is the small hole between the eye and the upper beak. This equalizes pressure on the brain in high speed dives.
