Hummingbirds belong to the large family Trochillidae of Typical Hummingbirds and subfamilies Trochininae (typical hummingbirds) and Phaethornithinae (hermits). Because of the large number of hummingbird species I cannot list them all but all the genera are listed. Those species with photos (and some others) are listed and highlighted in red.

In the United States I am used to Hummingbirds being called Hummingbirds. But in Costa Rica and many other Neotropical countries, they go by many other name as well -
Coquettes, Plumeleteers, Hermits, Emeralds, Gems, Mangos, Sabrewing, Snowcap, Woodnymphs, and others.
