The Kea Nestor notabilis is a large tame parrot that especially frequents the South Island Alps around highways at tunnel entrances and exits, at ski huts and other sites of human habitation. They were once thought to kill sheep and were thus shot by farmers. After it was found that they only feed on carrion, laws were passed to protect them.
True to this description photos 504-618 were taken at the entrance to the high alpine tunnel at the pass leading to Milford Sound on the North Island. They were perched on a tourist’s car and on the ground.
Photos 2025 to 2042 were taken at the Auckland Zoo. Photo 2042 shows the bright red under the wings, contrasting to the red on the breast and abdomen of the Kaka. This photo shows the powerful beak and claws.
Photos 4282 to 4286 were taken at the Otorohanga Kiwi House Zoo.
