The Yellow-eyed Penguinor HoihoMegadyptes antipodesis the rarest of all penguins. The Yellow-eyed Penguin is the sole extant species in the genus Megadyptes. It is native to New Zealand and closely related to the Blue or Little Penguin. It primarily a east fish. It breeds around the South Island of New Zealand, as well as Stewart, Auckland and Campbell Islands (see range map). Colonies on the Otago Peninsula at the Penguin Place are a popular tourist venue, where visitors may closely observe penguins from hides, trenches or tunnels. That is where most of these photos were taken. Photos 2166 – 2177 show the adult with a chick penguin.
Photos 453 and 458 were taken on the coast of Stewart Island and photo 9957 also taken on the Stewart Island coast is of a juvenile Yellow-eyed Penguin.
