Dunnock
The Dunnock or Hedgesparrow Prunella mandularis is a common European introduction. It looks like a female House Sparrow but with more grey on the mantle and crown. Also note the grey feathers just above the tail on these birds. Its range is throughout the North and South Islands.
It is unrelated to sparrows. They belong to the genus Prunella of accentors and the family Prunellidae consisting solely of the Prunella genus.
