The Vermillion Flycatcher is a real eye catcher. I was able to get a fair photo of one in the Galapagos (see those pages). On a morning bird watching walk along the San Pedro River a few miles north of the Mexican border we spotted one in the tree (8091, 8097). Not a bad photo from 80 years distance. Surprisingly, on the last day of the trip we were sitting around the pool at the Dessert Trails B&B east of Tucson, and a Vermillion Flycatcher plopped down on the edge of the pool.
The female flycatcher has none of the brilliant red of the male.
The immature male was seen at the Annenberg Estate in Palm Desert in December, 2012. It really had me going for awhile. I could not find it in any of the usual bird guides until I picked up an old Peterson Guide to Western Bifds and there he was, red crest, red throad but no red anywhere else, yet.
The photos of a female 0598-0613 were taken in the foothills of the Andes in Peru. They lack the brilliant red of the males.
