The Hawaii ElepaioChasiempis sandwichensis sandwichensis, is a subspecies of Elepaio and a member of the Monarch Flycatcher family. The other subspecies are the Kauai ElepaioChasiempis sandwichensis sclateri, and the O’ahu Elepaio Chasiempis sandwichensis gayi. They are described as very friendly and sometimes one can approach quite close. Its identification is aided by the fact it is the only forest bird with wing bars and like the wren sticks its tail high in the air. The two 6xxx photos were taken by John Drummond. The juvenile Elepaio was taken by Javan Rasnake. see (Elepaio, ComingsBirds.com/Hawaii).
