The Kauai ElepaioChasiempis sandwichensis sclaeri, a member of the Monarch Flycatcher family, is found both in the underbrush and canopy. It is described as very friendly and sometimes one can approach quite close, although we did not have the opportunity. Its identification is aided by the fact it is the only forest bird with wing bars and like the wren sticks its tail high in the air. The first two photos were on the Swamp Trail the third in silhouette was taken along the Kal Uapuhi Trail near the Kalalau Lookout.
The photo of the juvenile Elepaio was taken by Javan Rasnake.
