The Mallard Anas platyrhynchos is the most well known duck in the United States, present in the ponds of many parks and golf courses. Its brilliant green head is distinctive. The female is plain brown.
The eclipse male Mallard resembles the female except that its bill is dull olive (7279 & 7295). This eclipse male was photographed in a pond at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, Irvine, CA.
