The Double-crested Cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus, inhabits both salt-water and fresh-water habitats. Thes dramatic photograph of a Cormorant with outstretched winds was taken at the Arboretum, Arcadia, CA.

The photos with a blue background were taken at the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, Encino, CA.

Anytime I saw a cormorant along the Pacific Coast, even a little bit inland from the ocean it was bound to be a Double-created Cormorant. It is easily identified by the yellow mandible extending well past the eye (1578). It also has a thicker beak and a thicker neck in flight than the other cormorants.
