The Savagre Mountain Resort, along with the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve and Arenal Observatory Lodge are three of the most popular tourist sites in Costa Rica. The Savegre Mountain Resort is especially popular with bird watchers because of the relative ease of seeing the Resplendent Quetzal. This bird was high on my list of must see birds and I was not disappointed (see Quetzal Resplendent). One of the photos shows the crowd of birders the Resplendent Quetzal attracted even though the bird was quit a distance away. A long distance photo is better than no photo.
Savagre also has many hummingbird feeders and mountain trails. The latter start near the top of the mountain and to make things easier, a 4-wheeler is available to bring you to the top. The gardens and its flowers are magnificent. Sally had a field day. The cabins and the food were among the best of the lodges.
A few miles form the road to Savagre is Paraiso Quetzal, a privately owned small reserve specializing in viewing the Resplendent Quetzel. We also obtained some Quetzel photos there (see Quetzal Resplendent). It was also the site that allowed us to photograph the Fiery-throated Hummingbird and other great birds.
