I was exploring the marina at Crescent City and spied this Black Turnstone Arenaria melanocephala wandering around on the docks. He was very tolerant of my getting close, making for some great photos. Photo 1698 shows him picking at the barnacles on the wood pilings, instead of ‘turning over’ stones.
As I got closer and closer he finally took off affording a series of photos showing the remarkably complex black and white patterning on his wings in flight (1734, 1732, 1714). The wings are white underneath (1721).
