Stewart Island Shag
The Stewart Island Shag, Stewart Shag or Bronze Shag Phalacrocorax chalconotus is a species of shag endemic to the southern most parts of the South Island of New Zealand, from the Otago Peninsula south to the Foveaus Starit, and the to Stewart Island/Rakiur from which it takes its name. The species is dimorphic in appearance. Roughly half the individuals are mostly dark bronze, but with white patches, similar to the King Shag; the remainder are bronze all over. The two morphs breed together indifferently.
They have a row of white feathers along the scapulars and pink feet. The eye ring is dark grey.
This Stewart Island Shag was photographed on a small rocky island in the Stuart Island Harbor.
