TO SEE A SLIDESHOW OF THE BIRDS OF THR HONOLULU ZOO CLICK ON SLIDESHOW
We have come to Maui Hawaii every year in February for the past 5 years and once to Kauai. As a result I obtained photos of most of the birds on these two islands. On our 2012 visit, I flew over to Honolulu for a day to photograph birds at the Honolulu Zoo. They have an excellent collection. This resulted in 33 new species, 31 are presented on this web site. There were 20 birds that were not new and these have been added to the Birdgroups websites except for the King Vulture. The new photos of this magnificent bird were so dramatic I have included them in this web site. Finally, there were two birds that were flying free in the trees around the zoo. These were the Red-vented Bulbul and the Common Waxbill. Since these were ‘native’ Hawaiian birds they have been added to the www.ComingsBirds.com/Hawaii website.
Some of the 20 birds in the Honolulu zoo that were not new, but nonetheless provided some good photos included the Asian Fairy-bluebird, Bleeding-heart Dove, Common Pintail, Galah, Great Argus Pheasant, Green-winged Dove, Hammerkop, Ostrich, Peach-faced Lovebird, Pied Imperial Pigeon, Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise, Red-tailed Leiothrix, Toco Toucan, Twany Frogmouth, White-headed Buffalo Weaver and Wrinkled Hornbill. As stated above these have been added to their respective places in the Birdgroups websites.
One of the more thrilling aspects of the visit was rounding a corner and seeing a Cheetah standing regally right in front and staring at me.
As close-up view was equally impressive.
Also great fun was a video of the Howling Monkey (see movies)
