The Vermillion Flycatcher is so striking that it is shown on almost all sets of Galapagos pictures. It inhabits the highlands of most of the large islands. I really wanted a picture of it. The only highlands we were planning to visit were on Santa Cruz were the giant tortoises were. I was told not to get my hopes up – there was only about a 50 percent chance of seeing one and less than that for a good photograph. However, only 15 minutes after beginning our hike Martin spotted one on a near by branch (9024). It quickly flew to another branch where it was more easily photographed against the background of a tree trunk. I fired away and was pleased to see I had captured it.
