Before the Florida trip one of the birds I was most anxious to photograph was the Florida Scrub Jay. We had many Western Scrub Jays in our backyard (see ComingsBirds.com - Jays) and I was interested in seeing the difference between the two. I was told that the best place to see them was the Oscar Scherer State Park near Sarasota. To increase our chances we hiked on the path recommended by the locals. After over a hour we saw a Little Blue Heron but no Florida Scrub Jays. We had told everyone we saw on the trail what we were after. During the second hour one of the individuals yelled to us, “There is one over here.” When I got close, it was in a tree some fifty yards away, providing little opportunity for a good close up photograph. So, based on my experience with the Steller’s Jay (see ComingsBirds.com – Steller’s Jay) I pulled out a piece of bread and threw it on the trail. Within 30 seconds, the Jay was only a few feet away providing great close-ups. The differences include the presence of a whitish forehead and pale brownish under parts in the Florida Scrub Jay compared to no white forehead and a gray under parts in the Western Scrub Jay. These features are especially well seen in photos 3362 and 3440.
