The Sociable Weaver or Social Weaver (Philetairus socius) is in the Ploceidae family of weavers, endemic to Southern Africa. The range of the sociable weaver is shown in the range map. They build large compound community nests, a rarity among birds. These nests are perhaps the most spectacular structure built by any bird. Photo 1774 shows an example of these outsized nests.
