The California CondorGymnogyps californianus is the largest North American land bird with a wing-span of 8.2 to 9.5 feet. The close-up photos of condor faces shows that some are pink and some are black. As with other condors and vultures the pink color is due to the absence of feathers.
It is a severely threatened species. At one time their numbers were down to less than 20 birds. It has a life span of 60 years. After years of intensive effort the number is now 391 with 181 in the wild.
Their range is the mountains of mid California and the Grand Canyon region of Arizona southern Utah.
The photos in the 1000 series were taken at the Santa Barbara Zoo which has 5 California Condors. The remaining photos were taken at the San Diego Zoo.
