The sides of our condo on Maui are composed of brown lava rocks with many holes and crannies. I was sitting on the porch, glanced at the side of a neighboring condo and noticed birds constantly flying in and out. When I looked through the telephoto lens I was treated to the sight of a thick, bright red beak on a bird with a black head, white cheeks, white body, black tail and red eye ring – a Java Sparrow Padda oryzivora. Such are the rewards of photographing birds in semi-tropical Pacific Islands. It is native to Indonesia. A front view (4445) shows its red legs and a tan lower body. A head on view emphasizes the large reddish bill and red eye rings (2760). The females have a greyish instead of a black crown.
