Mousebirds are members of the Coliidae family consisting only of mousebirds. Since they have no known close affinity to other birds they are given order status Coliiformes. Their habit of scurrying about in the foliage like mice gave them their name. It has been proposed that they represent living fossils because there are only 6 species remaining of a huge number of similar Paleogene (Lower Tertiary) and Miocene birds. Their range is sub-Saharan Africa.
