The Violet-crowned WoodnymphThalurania colombica, also known as the Purple-crowned Woodnymph, is a medium-sized hummingbird found through Central Americal and Northern South America. The Violet-crowned Woodnymph is a common to abundant bird of wet lowlands and foothills to 2500 m, and may move higher when not breeding.
The male has a bright green gorget and blue crown. Where the male is green the female is white.
These were photographed at Rancho Naturalista, Costa Rica. When photographed with a flash 50 years above the ponds the gorget is green above a blue abdomen and white reflecting from the eyes (8713).
