The endemic Hawaiian Goose or Nene (neigh neigh) Goose Branta sandvicensis is the state bird of Hawaii. By the 1950’s it have been hunted to virtual extinction. Through concerted conservation efforts it is staging a comeback. We first saw this bird several years ago on the back nine of the Kahili Golf Course in Maui. This year they were on the Dunes Golf Course (hole number #12 & #13) and that is where all these pictures were taken. On the last visit, March 4th, there were several juveniles 5039 and 5048, a welcome sight for a bird that was on the brink of extinction.
