The most remote trail on Kauai is the Swamp Trail in Köke State Park. We didn’t think our aging joints would allow us to traverse the several miles down the steep, often slippery Pihea Trail to get to the Swamp Trail, listed in the bird guides as one of the best places to see some of the rarer Kauaian birds. I was especially interested in seeing three birds that were unique to Kauai the Kauai Elepaio, Kauai Amakihi, and the endangered ‘Akeke’e While having lunch at the restaurant next to the Köke Museum we meet two ladies who told up about a local bird guide, David Kuhn www.soundshawaiian.com. We called him and he took us by 4-wheel drive to a level trail that was much closer to the Swamp Trail. On that day we saw all three of the above species. Photographing over distances to treetops and in the forest is a challenge, and thus the photos are not the best available, but the birds can be easily identified. The ‘Akeke’e and photos of the Swamp Trail are shown on this page. The other two birds have their own page. The ‘Akeke’e Loxops caeruleirostris also called the Kaua’I ‘Ãkepa feeds high in the canopy. Its numbers recently declined to the point that it is very difficult to find. We were lucky.
