Kookaburras are large to very large Tree Kingfishers in the family Halcyonidae. While the Laughing KookaburraDacelo novaegineae is named for its laughing call, in this silent still every picture showed it with its mouth open like it was constantly laughing. It is a carnivorous bird in the kingfisher (tree or wood kingfishers) family and alike all kingfishers it sits on a branch waiting for its prey to show itself. Its range is Western Australia and New Zealand (see map).
