One of the world's largest colonies of the California Gull Larus californicus is at Mono Lake, CA. The island in the middle of the lake is a breeding ground for 80% of California Gulls. The first four photographs were taken at Mono Lake. One of the attractions of the lake for wildlife is the billions of flies along the shore. Thousands of these can be seen in the first photograph. Since wings are an important characteristic of gulls, two of the photos are of flying gulls showing black tips, grey above and white below. A close (9290) up of a California gull on Mussel Shoals, CA shows the characteristic red and black lower bill.
