The Oregon Junko is a subspecies (oreganus) of the Dark-eyed Junko Junco hyemalis. This variant is common in the Western United States especially in winter. It showed up in our back yard in early January, heralding the new year. The male has a black hood while the hood of the female 9971 has a dark sooty instead of black hood.

We couldn’t take a bird photography trip down the Oregon Coast without photos of the Oregon Junco Junco hyemalis. Photos 0726 and 0739 were taken at the Honeyman State Park, Florance, OR.
