The White IbisEudocimus albus is best known for its all white color and red bill and feet. The juvenile, however, is different. It still has the red bill and feet, but the neck is grey and the body look like it can’t make up its mind to be pink or blue. It is just starting to be white in the lower abdomen. Juveniles have a dark brown body speckled to a varying degrees with white feathers and a grey neck.
The Everglades is a great place for photographing unique looking birds. It is as though every bird with an outlandish bill applied for residency status there. We visited in September, not the best time for birding. No flamingos, no spoonbills. There were however, a plethora of adult and juvenile White ibis Eudocimus albus.
The photos in the 0729-0748 series were taken at Discovery Cove and shown juvenile White Ibis.
