Within the U.S. the range of the Blue-throated HummingbirdLampornis clemenciae is restricted to Southeastern Arizona. Thus, when I heard that it was common in the Cave Creek area I asked Reed Peters, the owner of the Cave Creek Ranch, “When and where it the best place to photograph it?” His answer was the ‘when’ was at dusk after the sun went down, and the ‘where’ was at the bush next to his office. So I put an external flash unit on my Canon 50D and stationed myself a few feet from the bush. The Blue-throated Hummingbird is noticeably larger than most western species, except the Magnificent Hummingbird, and its wing beats are slower. It announces it presence by a hissing call. My sharp eyed and eared wife would yell there is one and I would click away.
