The Zebra DoveGeopelia striata is also one of the most common birds on Maui. From a distance it appears to be very plain. However, up close is it has a beautiful tortoise colored eye ring encompassing a similar colored round iris. From the side the rear two-thirds are a plain light brown and the shoulders and breast a show a striking series of fine black and white stripes, thus the name Zebra Dove. From the front the stripes don’t quite meet leaving a light brown band of down the middle of breast. The morning hours on Maui are filled with the gentle cooing of this dove. It makes more noise than the larger Spotted Dove. The “smaller the dove the louder the noise.”
