I have been intrigued by the Harpy EagleHarpia harpyja ever since I read about it in Vera and Bob Thornton’s book Chasing Neotropical Birds. This is a rare, difficult to find and photograph eagle, native to northern South America. It is among the largest of the living species of eagle in the world. The Thornton’s felt that if there were a “big five” of the Neotropical Birds they would be the Scarlet Macaw, Resplendent Quetzal, Keel-billed Toucan, Andread Cock-of-the-rock and the Harpy Eagle.
