As we were touring Molokai, Hawaii, looking for birds to photograph, Sally said, “Look at the red and blue birds over there.” Not only were there red and blue birds but green, orange, and pink – all over. They were pigeons on the roof of a barn just outside of Kaunakakai. When I got close enough for photos it was clear the colors were not real – they looked like food coloring. I searched the web and found there were a number of pigeon racing clubs in Hawaii, including one in Kaunakakai, and the pigeons were dyed with food coloring to more easily tell which one was coming in first. What a sight!
