The Acorn Woodpecker has a striking face, with a red crown, black mask around the eyes, chin and nape, white cheeks and forehead and white iris (9090). The rest of the body shows a black back and white rump and breast with black streaks. Its range is predominately California, Oregon, Arizona and New Mexico.
The last two photos, taken at the Walker House in late April, showed a very unusual plumage with reddish primary and covert feathers. This may represent an unusual molt, a hybrid, or a somatic mutation causing pigment abnormalities.
