The Broad-tailed Hummingbird Selasphorus platycercus has a longer and broader tail than other western hummers. Unlike the Rufus and Allen’s Hummingbirds that have a rufus color to much of the outer tail feathers, in the Broad-tailed the rufus color is restricted to the area close to the body. This is well shown in photo 5766.
In flight it has a loud, distinctive wing buzz. The bottom of the gorget is more scalloped than that of the Black-chinned Hummingbird.
