The male Broad-billed Hummingbird Cynanthus latirostris is one of the most beautiful of the hummingbirds. Many of the pictures in bird guides don’t do it justice. The name comes from the width (broad) of the base of the bright red bill. In the sunlight the bright light green iridescence of the crown and darker blue-green iridescence of the throat, breast and abdomen are striking.
The female has some red on its bill but not nearly as striking as in the male, and the throat and abdomen are dull white. The range of the Broad-billed Hummingbird is largely in Mexico with a small budge into southeastern Arizona with rare occurrences in southwest Texas.
Photo 0613, somewhat out of focus, was included to show the typical 10 feathers of the tail.
